Written by Spiti Valley, often called the middle land, offers landscapes your eyes want to soak in.
Each corner of the valley is a little piece of heaven, and your mind wants to memorise the valley in more ways than one. And that is where a camera comes in handy. While all nooks and corners are worth capturing, some locations do steal a piece of your heart.
Take for instance, Komic, a village set at a height of approximately 15,000 ft., which offers a view of snow-capped mountains all around and of the valley beneath it, all while the wind gusts. You witness the serenity of this village when you see a handful of people walking across an immense landscape. An aerial picture of the village shows the scale of the landscape you can witness here.
Coming a little down towards the village of Langza (also known as ‘fossil village’), get ready to be swayed by the aura of Lord Buddha, as you witness his statue in its most gigantic form. It is often said that the statue faces the peaks and valley in front of it, only to signify that the Lord is always looking over and protecting His people. Images composed here often contain mountains and snow peaks, with Lord Buddha’s magnificent statue, and the tiny human beings we are compared to Him. Photography trips to Spiti are incomplete without a visit to Langza.
On the other side of the valley lie Dhankar and Pin Valley. Dhankar, the erstwhile headquarters of Spiti, houses the iconic Dhankar Monastery and the village exhibits large vertical rock formations over and above the rocky mountains. The views to and from the monastery are both magical in their own ways. Pin Valley, to the photographer, is a valley known for its humongous mountain ranges, in as much as some of them may not get captured even in a vertical shot.
Lastly, a hidden gem that deserves glory is the quaint Losar village. What helps describe Losar as exceptional is its brushed and textured mountain ranges which are often highlighted by the chiaroscuro game of sky and clouds. Do take out your cameras here, because you will learn the importance of light and shadow in landscape photography.
Of course, there will be many other spots in the town that will mesmerize you, and don’t forget to immerse yourself in anything you see whilst you’re on your Spiti photography tour. Also, you never know, your best composition may not come from where everyone is clicking. Maybe you need to turn around and look the other way!
